What I've been saying (News, Blog and Media)
The Minister for Housing, Jan O’Sullivan TD, this evening accepted a contention by Independent NUI Senator Rónán Mullen that there was a gap in the law affecting tenants where banks had appointed receivers over investment properties in mortgage arrears.
People in the Labour Party would be surprised at the statement by the Minister Leo Varadkar that pro-life politicians voting against the Government’s abortion legislation would be ‘proven wrong by history’, Senator Rónán Mullen said today.
People face a double disadvantage in life if their economic prospects are reduced both by disability status and by lower levels of education, Senator Rónán Mullen said this evening.
I have long believed in the importance of restorative justice processes as an alternative to prison. Currently the justice system is failing to deliver. It continues to lock up the poor and the vulnerable but it does not prevent crime or deter offenders. It does not address the root causes of crime and it does not manage to rehabilitate offenders very much either. Evidence of this can be found in the high rate of recidivism. The truth is that nobody benefits from crime, neither victims nor the community and under the current justice system the offender does not benefit especially if he or she continues to re-offend.
